Expatriate Websites – an untapped resource

How many of you can't go more than 24 hours without accessing the Internet? A show of hands please. Yes, I thought so. I’m sure there’s not many of you without your hand in the air at the moment. If there are, firstly well done for not being as addicted as the rest of us. Secondly, those of you with your hand raised, you best put it down as people around you might wonder what you’re doing!

The Internet is now as much a part of our daily lives as brushing our teeth, drinking our coffee and using our cell phones. In discussing the Internet for the purposes of Expatriates, I’m purposely not going to touch on the phenomenon that is Social Networking... that’s a whole article in itself. What I do want to talk about is the potentially untapped resource of focused Expatriate websites.

From initial research conducted by Coppergate International, we found numerous websites (48 at the last count) aimed at varying levels of the expatriate community: some cater to students embarking on a life of traveling and working as they go, others are for the more seasoned executive expatriate catering to the more cultivated circumstances in which they find themselves. Some focus on a particular Nationality, while others will concentrate on the region in which they operate. Many of the sites have been founded by expatriates themselves, born out of their own frustrations at not being able to find the support or information they needed in their own relocations.

As far as the World Wide Web goes, we know that 48 websites does not sound like much, but with everything else you and your expatriate workforce are managing, how do you know where to start? Coppergate International shares our Top Four recommendations to help you on your way:

Expat Women: Helping Women Living Overseas. Expatriate Women Living Abroad

What the site says:

A site designed to help all women living overseas. Our mission is to inspire your success abroad. Whether this is your first experience living abroad, you are a long-term expat woman, a repatriate, a researcher, an HR or Relocation Professional looking for expat resources or someone just dreaming of expat living, we have something for you!

Why we love it:

It does what it says above! A great mixture of expatriate personal stories, interviews with those involved in relocation either personally or professionally (or both!), focused advice regarding business ideas for expatriate spouses, relevant information for HR professionals based on the personal feedback of members, and so much more. Additionally, through the personality of its Co-Founder Andrea Martins, the site retains a personal, family feel where all are welcome.

Who it’s great for:

Women who are part of the relocation community either through their HR careers, or their role as an assignee or trailing spouse across the globe. It offers something for everyone!

Why we love it:

The Discussion Forums are a fantastic source of information for transferees making a move from their home country. Specified into regions, users can quickly identify the location they are interested in researching, and post questions that will be answered by individuals who have been in their situations. Frequented by attorneys and other professional advisors, the forums often provide advice on tricky VISA and Immigration issues that can assist users when interacting with their actual advisors, ensuring they get the most out of the process.

Who it’s great for:

Although the majority of users will be British Nationals, as the site’s name would suggest, it is suitable for any nationality that is making a move out of their Home Country. Great for transferees that are looking to have practical questions answered and pro-active advice from individuals that have gone before them in the relocation process.

Coppergate International

OK, OK, I know, but I have to recommend ours because it’s great! It was tempting to put it at number one, but even I thought that would be too much!

Why we love it:

It provides both the transferee and client with up to date, key information on every aspect of the relocation process. For transferees our Online Relocation Guide gives 24/7 access to both relocation generic, and location specific information that has been formatted and condensed to ensure they can get to the detail quickly without being overwhelmed. It basically answers their questions, before they know what questions they need to ask! For clients, our Transferee Progress Snapshot provides detailed up to date tracking information on the relocation process for each employee from start to finish.

Who it’s great for:

With its unique elements, it’s a benefit to both Transferees and Clients. For Transferees who are looking to gather information on their new location from what they need to do on their first day, through to what is available for their kids’ birthday party in six months time. For clients looking to be up to date and in control of the relocation process without having day to day involvement in the tasks.

Global Education Explorer

What the site says:

Relocating families now have a cost-effective, web-based resource to best understand and compare educational systems across the globe. Developed by premiere global educational consulting firm, School Choice International, Global Education Explorer will enable you to quickly compare curriculum, assessments and customs between countries simply by inputting your home and destination countries, and child's birthdates. Global Education Explorer includes everything 'parents need to know'. Take a “look here” for more information on the site.

Why we love it:

It provides distinct information and curriculum comparisons on the educational systems in key locations, allowing families to make informed decisions about this all important settlement issue.

Who it’s great for:

Anyone relocating with children or individuals within the Relocation Community charged with assessing policy in relation to the requirement for private versus public education in multiple global locations.

In conclusion we believe the perfect mix of support for expatriates comes from both personalized face to face time with Destination Services Consultants, and the ability to quickly reach information via the Internet. We hope our recommendations will assist you and your relocating community to find that perfect balance.
